==Plot==

Sixteen-year-old Jude Keffy-Horn (Asa Butterfield) is living in Vermont with his adoptive mother, Harriet (Julianne Nicholson) and adoptive sister, Prudence (Nadia Alexander). In December 1987, Jude and his best friend, Teddy (Avan Jogia), bus down to New York City where Jude’s father, Les (Ethan Hawke), lives. Jude and his father have a tumultuous relationship due to the fact that Les left Jude when he was younger. Teddy and Jude meet Eliza (Hailee Steinfeld), whose mother, Di, (Emily Mortimer) is dating Les. Teddy and Eliza have a falling out over the topic of Les, and Jude leaves the party they are attending. Teddy and Jude find an empty car and talk; then Teddy goes back inside to the party. Jude is found by the owners of the car who beat him up and leave him in the snow. Eliza introduces Teddy to cocaine and the pair snort some before having sex in the bathroom and leave. Eliza goes back home while Teddy, who finds Jude, heads back to Vermont with Jude. The pair pass out in the snow outside of Harriet’s house. Harriet awakens to find Jude unconscious and Teddy dead. Eliza is given the duty of contacting Teddy’s half-brother, Johnny (Emile Hirsch), who becomes enraged and blames Jude for Teddy’s death.
When Eliza tells Johnny she is pregnant, he proposes that they tell their parents that the baby is his, after an old tradition that says after a man dies, the brother will take care of the family, and because he’s blood. The couple marry in a traditional Hindu ceremony since a marriage license requires parental consent. Later, Eliza confides in Jude that she believes Johnny is seeing someone else, and Jude loses his virginity to Eliza.
Jude and Eliza take a bus back to New York, and arrive in the East Village during the start of the Tomkins Square Park Riots. Johnny tells Eliza that he has not been visiting another woman, but Teddy’s father; and that he wants the baby to be given to Teddy’s parents. Eliza is outraged, but eventually chooses to give the baby up for adoption. As the film ends, Johnny throws Teddy’s ashes into the river while Jude narrates from ten years later about how Eliza is in Brooklyn starting her own family and how he too is going to be a father.
